The Premier Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this work could seem closer to a difficult scholarly examination than the latest pop album by an artist whose previous single featured a global pop icon. Split across four separate parts and sung in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward here, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, with sole credit going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to blend the past with the present, its scale are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The song then segues to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you rarely exactly know—or even want to predict—what you is going to next."

Almost each track ends at a completely distinct point than where it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is little coincidence that it has achieved her first release to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung entirely in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging hooks as it spins skyward. This feat is repeated on a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most restlessly creative practitioner.
