Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
