Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
