Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
